Earth Hour

Get Ready for Earth Hour!

Earth Hour is an international event which brings attention to energy use across the world by asking everyone to power down lights, TVs and computers from 8:30 to 9:30 pm on March 31, 2012.

GSHPA troops are encouraged to start now and go “Beyond the Hour” with these ideas.

Discover ways to use less energy in your home or meeting place.  Visit http://www.girlscouts.org/gsforevergreen/Earth-Hour.asp and select “Want to Learn More” for ways to get involved.

Then Connect other people with your eco-friendly ways and Take Action to convince others to be Forever Green.

Register your troop’s participation at http://girlscouts.org/gsforevergreen/Earth-Hour-Details.asp#theproject.

Get started by using the GSHPA Activities/Resources below and the GSUSA resources found at www.gsusa.org.

Earth Hour Activities/Resources

Discover

  • Think about activities that don’t require much energy and plan to do them at your next meeting or at a special meeting during Earth Hour on March 31, 2012.
  • Walk around your home or meeting place and identify everything that uses energy.  Talk about each item.  Is it energy-efficient?  If you’re not sure, how would you find out?  Can you use it less or change it to make it more energy-efficient?
  • Play games, have an indoor campfire, sing songs or create the Forever Green fortune teller activity.
Connect
  • Change the incandescent light bulbs in your home to compact fluorescent or energy-efficient bulbs.
  • Also, remind others to “Flip the Switch!” and turn off lights when they leave the room.  Download a lightswitch template here or make signs and hang them on or near light switches.  Do this at home, school, or work.  For a project that conveys a more permanent message, buy and decorate wooden switch plates from a craft or home improvement store.
Take Action
  • Approach a business or community organization and ask them to power down for Earth Hour on March 31st from 8:30 to 9:30PM.
  • Write to your local political representative and ask her to honor Girl Scouts by voting for legislation that keeps the outdoors beautiful and makes our daily lives more energy efficient.

Forever Green Video Chats

All Cadettes, Seniors and Ambassadors are invited to Join GSHPA for our Forever Green Video Chat Series! The first installment in our video chat* series is Environmental Advocates How do you decide that you love something enough to spend your life making it, growing it, or teaching others about it? Let’s ask the experts. Beginning this November, Girl Scouts in grades 6-12 can participate in several live video chats with business owners, public speakers, and educators who have chosen to be Forever Green.

Please check back for future scheduled video chats.

*A video chat is a real-time, online discussion that features a host and a presenter. Participants need a computer (Mac or PC) with internet access and speakers to see and hear presentations. In the comfort of their own homes, girls can watch short presentations and ask questions of the presenter via the “chat” function.
