June 16, 2020 (HARRISBURG, PA) — Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania (GSHPA) is offering a summer camp experience, like none other, for girls ages K-12. Five weeks of Virtual Camp—with a unique theme each week—brings the Summer Camp experience to a girl’s living room, rec room or basement.
The five week summer camp begins Monday, July 6 with the Crafty Camper theme. Each day of camp includes daytime activities and some theme weeks offer evening programming. Registration for each week is available at GSHPA’s website events calendar; links to the website calendar are included below for each theme being offered.
“The summer camp experience universally defines Girl Scouting,” says Janet Donovan, president & CEO of GSHPA. “The outdoors was the first girl-focused program of founder Juliette Gordon Low, more than 100 years ago. Girls still plan all year to participate in camp.” Donovan goes on to say that this summer, despite its challenges, is no different. “We are offering girls a virtual summer camp experience that includes all the favorite Girl Scout activities,” she said. “Girls can expect to sing camp songs, make new friends, try unique activities and experience a virtual campfire, just like they would at traditional Girl Scout camp.”
Each week’s theme provides a unique kit of activities. Every registered Virtual Camper receives in the mail a kit complete with a full week of activities. The kits provide everything required (household items may be necessary for certain activities, ex. cups, plates, etc.) for each Virtual Camper and also include activities, supplementary handouts, and a themed fun patch.
GSHPA Virtual Camp includes live, facilitated Zoom activities integrating age level interactive programming designed specifically for girls. Girl Scouts and non-member girls can register and attend Virtual Camp. Fees for Virtual Camp are listed at the registration page for each themed week.
Girl Scouts of USA, the national Girl Scout organization, has launched a Virtual Camp Marketplace, open to all girls of any age. Girls, whether members of Girl Scouts or not, can register for virtual Girl Scout Camps happening across the country. Virtual sessions include classic Girl Scout camp experiences (like singing songs, earning badges, and making s’mores), plus exciting themes, like astronomy, theater, culinary arts, environmental stewardship, and more.
The legacy of Girl Scouts and the outdoors is profound. Studies show that 71 percent of Girl Scouts ages 8–14 tried their first outdoor activity through Girl Scouting and half would not have had access to outdoor activities and programming if not for Girl Scouts.
