Foxfire House at Furnace Hills
Foxfire House is a 19th Century bank house and is on the National Registry of Historic Places. Foxfire House is aptly named, as 'Foxfire' combines the early legends of the House with modern enthusiasm for learning about the past. Girl Scout and local volunteers offer workshops on 18th and 19th Century skills and crafts with emphasis on the Pennsylvania German culture. Scherenschnitte, quilting, soap-making, rug braiding, fracture schriften, cornhusk weaving, and egg dyeing are typical subjects.
Troops may stay for a day or a weekend while working on the Foxfire House patch. They may bake bread in the squirrel-tail oven and cook rivvel soup on the ten-plate stove. Many troops and individuals participate in work/fun days, donating their services to further the preservation and maintenance of the site.
Tours of Foxfire House must be requested in writing at least four weeks in advance.
