Learn how to teach basic safety and paddling knowledge as well as rescue skills. Successful completion of the course allows you to facilitate boating at Camp Archbald.
What to Expect:
The first day of the course teaches participants what is expected of them for the testing portion of the course. The training for this certification includes a base knowledge module (non-craft specific) plus four complementary modules that focus specifically on canoeing, kayaking, row boating, and stand-up paddling (SUP). Classes begin with a land-based session to discuss key topics. The class will then move to the on-water session where the group will work on paddling skills. You will be required to complete a written exam and demonstrate all needed on water/in water skills to pass the course. . Participants do not need any previous boating experience, but must be comfortable in open water and have basic swimming skills.
Details:
Each day of the course is around 6 to 7 hours in length. Sometimes it can take longer if we need more time to cover the required skills.
The cost of the course is $50 per person and includes the use of the watercraft for the class, classroom instruction, and water instruction.
Every participant will complete the Base Knowledge Module. Then you may register for the watercraft you would like to facilitate. All watercraft courses are included in the cost of the course.
Lodging and Food:
Meals are not provided. There are microwaves and fridges available for your use on camp.
Shared housing can be provided if requested. It is recommended that participants stay the night at camp prior to the course commencing so they can be well rested for the day.
Age Requirements:
You must be at least 18-years of age to pass as a full facilitator. Participants ages 16-17 may pass as a Qualified Assistant Facilitator or Junior Facilitator and may only facilitate boating under the supervision and direction of a fully qualified facilitator. Junior Facilitators who complete 20 hours of facilitation may earn the Service to Girl Scouts bar.
Weather and Water Conditions:
Please note this class will happen rain or shine so please be prepared. If we are unable to conduct the training due to extreme weather conditions, we will text and call prior to the training.
